Telling
Ain't Training - Updated, Expanded, and Enhanced!
The
second edition of Telling Ain't Training hits bookstores
May 2011. After 10 years, this best-selling book has been updated,
expanded and enhanced to give readers a fresh look at what works
and what doesn't in the world of training and learning. As with
the original publication, this book provides an entertaining and
practical tour-de-force for every trainer and performance improvement
professional.
Telling
Ain't Training - Updated, Expanded, and Enhanced deliberately
avoids the one-way communication of "telling" trainers
how to be more effective. Instead, it uses an interactive approach
which models the basic message of the book - that is, humans learn
best through active mental engagement. As with the first edition,
we have done away with many of the conventions we normally apply
to our writings. Except for a very few references to specific individuals
from whom we have directly borrowed ideas or words, we have eliminated
the usual citation practices. Instead, we have placed at the end
of the book a list of references (updated and greatly expanded in
this edition) you can consult to dig more deeply into some aspect
of what we present. In this second edition, we also provide "endnotes"
that not only cite references, but also position them. A new section
that addresses technology and learning conceptually and provides
rich examples and pragmatic considerations has been added to this
edition.
The ultimate goal of the book is to offer the reader an opportunity
to break through learning barriers, to separate learning myth from
research-based findings, and to dispel counterproductive beliefs
and practices that harm the instructional process. An absolute must
read for anyone interested, entering or already involved in workplace
learning.
After May 20, order your copy at www.astd.org!

Effective Learning Systems Models - Part III
By Harold D. Stolovitch and Erica J. Keeps
In this series of articles, we address whole learning systems,
some of which are rarely used although they have demonstrated
effectiveness. We're not certain why some beneficial systems
aren't used more frequently, but our experience tells us that
many people in the learning and performance world either don't
know about them, don't know how to develop and implement them,
or simply are fearful of rocking the boat.
We continue to address these learning systems (natural experience,
experimental learning, structured on-the-job training [SOJT],
learner-controlled instruction [LCI] and individual developmental
plans) which have stood the test of time and have demonstrated
effectiveness in this edition of the HSA e-Xpress. For each
of these learning systems models, we have created an information
chart that can familiarize you with them and help you try
them out. In the January 2011 edition of the HSA e-Xpress,
we presented structured on-the-job training learning (click
HERE
to read it), in October 2010, we presented experiential learning
to read it), and in July 2010, we presented natural experience
to read it). In this edition, we offer learner-controlled
instruction. READ

Sharing Learning and Performance in Singapore
In
March 2011, Harold was an invited speaker at the NTUC LearningHub
Trainers Conference 2011 in Singapore. Erica and Harold found
the people to be most hospitable and eager to share their
wonderful country and the work they perform.
In the photo above, Harold and Erica are with the LearningHub's
conference organizers, Angeline Thia Chui Lin and Cindy Tan,
and invited speaker,
Gary Willmott. The photo at right is Harold in the midst of
one of his many learning games. The photo at left is Erica
working with participants to create an interactive learning
session.
